down the tbr hole, week 5

Week 5! I’m not very good at keeping this weekly post consistent but it’s the thought that counts, right? I’m writing this Saturday night after a fun night of curry and wine so I’m harnessing my current tipsiness to tear through the next 5 books on my list. Hopefully, I’ll be able to trim a few more off since I’ve been adding even more books onto my ‘to-read’ shelf in my new Friday meme New Finds Friday. My to-read list is forever growing, but I’m at least attempting to keep it under control.

Here are the rules once again and a quick shout out to Lost in a Story for creating this challenge.

RULES

  • Go to your goodreads to-read shelf.
  • Order on ascending date added.
  • Take the first 5 (or 10 if you’re feeling adventurous) books
  • Read the synopses of the books
  • Decide: keep it or should it go?

Let’s the game’s begin!

Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy (1874)

I feel like I should have started with this Tolstoy novel instead of War and Peace. My new plan for War and Peace is to watch the BBC miniseries which I have downloaded so that I already have a good idea of the characters before I continue reading the novel. Wish me luck. In the meantime, Anna Karenina is staying on my ‘to-read’ list as I’ve always wanted to read it. It’s just a matter of when.

Verdict – KEEP

Les Misérables by Victor Hugo (1862

Keep, keep, keep! I could perform every part of this musical on cue as a one-woman show. I love this story but I’ve never read the book or seen it live. It’s one of my biggest dreams to see it in the West End, if only the tickets weren’t so crazy expensive. I think it’s time to start saving up! In the meantime, I really need to get around to reading the book.

Verdict – KEEP

Life of Pi by Yann Martel (2001)

I think I added this after watching the movie which was absolutely breathtaking. The story was wonderful and overall I really enjoyed it. However, at the time I saw it I had something going on in my life that I would rather not revisit and because of this, I’m going to remove the book from my to-read shelf. Best to keep the past in the past. Sorry, Yann Martel.

Verdict – PASS

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson (2005)

I bought this book about five or six years ago. I didn’t end up reading it but my mom did and she really liked it. This is such a popular book so I assume there’s a good reason for it. I’ve never seen the movies but the synopsis has always sounded interesting. I think I’ll steal it back from my mom the next time I’m home.

Verdict – KEEP

The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova (2005)

View on Goodreads.

I know there are a lot of mixed feelings about this book. I read Dracula last summer, as I’ve mentioned before, so I’d love to give this book a go. It has an interesting and unique premise and deals with a character I’d love to hear more about. So this one is definitely staying. Has anyone read The Historian? What did you think?

Verdict – KEEP

Not a  very successful week, but I did remember that I wanted to read The Historian. So that’s something at least! Are there any books on my list that you’ve read? Any that you loved/absolutely loathed? Let me know in the comments!
