Reflection: Writing my First Bad Review

I sat on this reflection post for a couple weeks before deciding to post it. I hope it helps new bloggers who might feel worried and isolated when writing a bad review.

When I first began blogging at the end of December I started following a bunch of other book bloggers and read what they wrote and watched what they were doing in the same way you would shadow a coworker at a new job. What I saw, and what I really wanted for myself, was authors approaching bloggers and offering their book for free in exchange for an honest review. And boy, did that ever sound like a sweet deal.

Inspired, I wrote up a notice on my Twitter saying that I was happily accepting books published by both indie press or traditional publishers. Within a couple days I was contacted by an author who wanted me to read their book. Great! This was exactly what I was looking for. Reviewing lesser known and newer books on my blog would certainly bring in some traffic and I was excited to help bring positive exposure to new writers. I was thrilled and after a quick back and forth the author emailed me a PDF of their book and I got down to reading.

Quick update — very busy!

Hi everyone!

I’m sorry for neglecting to post for the past few days. I’ve just started a new job so I’m having to reorganise my time a little bit while I adjust. I’m still reading and still drafting new posts that I hope to get live soon! I’m a bit slow at replying to comments but I want everyone to know that I am reading them and so happy for the lovely interactions that I get to have with everyone on my posts. Comments make me smile so thank you!

And a very warm hello and welcome to all my new followers, I’m so excited to have you here!

New content to come soon!!

TAG: Newbie Book Blogger

Since I’m new to the book blogging world I thought it would be appropriate to give this tag a go. I originally found this on Cozy Bookish Life who got it from The Book Mermaid — definitely check them both out! And share your own answers to these questions on your blog as well! I’d love to give them a read.

1. Why did you start this blog?

Three reasons: I love to write, I’m obsessed with books, and I miss being in university. That’s right, I’m one of those weirdos that actually liked being in school. I miss writing assignments and sharing thoughts on things I read with the class and my instructors. So this is kind of a similar experience but with a much wider audience. Oh and there isn’t a syllabus, so I can talk and read about whatever I want! Bonus!

2. What are some fun and unique things you can bring to book blogging?

I really like to read older books. So I’m hoping that, along with reviews of newer books, I’m able to bring more discussion of little-known favourites from the previous couple centuries! I’m also very obsessed with horror and look forward to sharing that with the book blogging community.
